Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's mac80211 Wi-Fi subsystem. This use-after-free vulnerability arises from incorrect handling of fast-RX rate data during mesh processing. This can lead to memory corruption, which an attacker could potentially exploit to cause a system crash (denial of service) or, in some cases, execute unauthorized code.
Statement
Red Hat has evaluated this issue as having a Moderate security impact because successful exploitation requires wireless hardware actively configured in an 802.11s mesh network forwarding topology. Wireless interfaces and mesh routing are uncommon in typical enterprise server deployments, substantially limiting exposure under default configurations. Where mesh forwarding is operational, an attacker within adjacent radio range could trigger the invalid memory reference, potentially causing a kernel panic or unauthorized privilege escalation.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
