Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's memory management subsystem. On 32-bit x86 systems with Transparent Huge Pages (THP) enabled, a missing feature for handling special page table entries can lead to incorrect tracking of memory resources. This can result in system warnings, errors related to memory state, and misrepresentation of memory usage, potentially impacting system stability and resource monitoring.
Statement
Red Hat has evaluated this issue as having a Moderate impact because exploitation is confined to local users and restricted to 32-bit x86 platforms utilizing transparent huge pages, limiting the blast radius to an unexpected denial of service. Active Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions only provide host kernels for 64-bit architectures and do not include the upstream changes that introduced the flaw. Therefore, standard Red Hat enterprise installations are not vulnerable in default environments.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
