Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ASoC) simple-mux audio codec. A local user or process with access to the ALSA sound control interface could exploit an incorrect bounds check in the simple_mux_control_put() function. This vulnerability allows an attacker to store an invalid mux state, which can lead to an out-of-bounds read, incorrect audio routing, or an invalid General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) state. The primary impact of this flaw is a potential denial of service.

Statement

This flaw is rated with Moderate severity because exploitation demands local system access with permissions to manipulate ALSA sound controls, restricting the practical outcome primarily to denial of service through out-of-bounds kernel memory reads. Standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux server and cloud deployments rarely operate or configure system-on-chip audio multiplexer hardware, substantially curtailing exposure in default environments. Additionally, older distributions such as RHEL 8 do not contain the affected code and remain unaffected.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
