Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Shared Memory Communications over RDMA (SMC-R) subsystem. A race condition allows a network socket to be released and freed while incoming messages are still being processed, leading to a use-after-free condition. A local attacker interacting with active SMC-R sessions can exploit this flaw to cause a kernel panic, resulting in a system crash and Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact because exploitation requires a local user to interact with active Shared Memory Communications over RDMA (SMC-R) connections, primarily resulting in a denial of service via a kernel panic. The issue cannot be triggered remotely without established SMC sessions, and SMC protocols are not utilized in default Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments without specialized RDMA hardware and explicit configuration. As a result, the blast radius is confined to systems actively running SMC-R workloads.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
