Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. A specially crafted Extended Display Identification Data (EDID), which describes display capabilities, can cause a heap out-of-bounds read in the drm_parse_tiled_block() function within the drm/edid component. This vulnerability could lead to system instability or the disclosure of sensitive information.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because successful exploitation requires either local user privileges or physical access to attach a peripheral monitor presenting malformed display configuration data, limiting the threat to a local denial of service or potential kernel memory disclosure. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux server environments, systems typically operate headless without dynamically attached monitors, significantly narrowing real-world exposure. However, virtualized guest instances or desktop workstations where users or emulated devices can supply custom video descriptors may still trigger the condition, potentially crashing the host or guest kernel.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
