Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. The libfs component, which manages certain internal file systems, did not properly enforce a security flag (SB_I_NOEXEC) that prevents code execution from specific memory areas. This allowed for the creation of executable memory regions from pseudo-filesystem file descriptors, such as those used by dma-buf. An attacker could potentially exploit this to execute unauthorized code, leading to a compromise of the system.
Statement
This vulnerability is evaluated as having Moderate impact because exploitation requires local access with the ability to allocate and map pseudo-filesystem file descriptors. The flaw stems from missing default mount flags on internal pseudo-filesystems such as dma-buf, which allows mappings to be created with executable permissions. Under standard Red Hat deployment configurations, the flaw cannot be triggered remotely and does not directly provide privilege escalation.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
