Description
A flaw was found in libceph within the Linux kernel. A remote attacker could send a maliciously crafted CEPH_MSG_OSD_MAP message, leading to a multiplication overflow in the decode_new_up_state_weight() function. This overflow causes an incorrect bounds check, which may result in out-of-bounds memory reads. This could potentially lead to information disclosure or system instability.
Statement
This flaw is rated as Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires an active connection to an untrusted or compromised Ceph storage cluster to deliver corrupted cluster map frames. The underlying libceph driver is not loaded by default on standard deployments and is only engaged when systems mount CephFS filesystems or map RBD volumes. Consequently, the blast radius is constrained to hosts utilizing kernel Ceph clients on untrusted networks, where an attack could induce a kernel panic or expose uninitialized memory.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
