Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's drm/xe/pt module. During certain memory management operations, an internal counter is not properly reset. Repeated attempts to perform these operations, possibly due to resource contention or out-of-memory conditions, can cause this counter to exceed its allocated bounds. This leads to an out-of-bounds write and a subsequent use-after-free vulnerability, which can result in a system crash, causing a denial of service.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as an Important impact because an unprivileged local user could trigger memory corruption, leading to a system denial of service or potential privilege escalation. The issue is confined to the Intel Xe graphics kernel driver and requires hardware utilizing this driver to be present and active. Deployments without supported Intel graphics hardware, or environments using other GPU drivers such as i915, are not exposed to this flaw.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.
