Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's NTFS filesystem driver. An incorrect locking order (ABBA deadlock) during file rename operations can lead to a race condition. A local attacker could exploit this by performing specific file system operations, causing the system to deadlock. This results in a Denial of Service (DoS), making the system unresponsive.
Statement
A moderate-severity flaw was found in the Linux kernel's NTFS filesystem driver. An incorrect mrec_lock locking order (ABBA deadlock) during file rename operations can race with the child-to-parent locking order used by the fsync and inode writeback paths, causing the kernel to deadlock. A local attacker with access to an NTFS filesystem could trigger this condition through specific file rename operations, resulting in a denial of service that makes the system unresponsive (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 through 10 (kernel and kernel-rt) and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS (kernel and kernel-ivos-qualcomm) are not affected by this flaw because the vulnerable code is not present in the shipped kernel versions of these products.
