Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Transparent Inter-Process Communication (TIPC) component. A remote or local attacker could send an oversized connection acknowledgment (ACK) message, leading to an integer underflow. This underflow can cause the connection to become permanently congested, effectively starving it of further transmissions and resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because it leads to a denial of service condition restricted to established TIPC connections, without compromising host integrity, disclosing sensitive data, or causing a kernel panic. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments, the TIPC kernel module is not loaded by default and must be explicitly configured. Consequently, the flaw only affects environments actively utilizing TIPC communication, where malformed peer traffic can indefinitely stall message delivery on the affected connection.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
