Description
A flaw was found in the Bluetooth subsystem of the Linux kernel. During the unregistration of a Bluetooth device, the system fails to properly disable timers before freeing the associated memory. This can lead to a use-after-free vulnerability, where the system attempts to access memory that has already been released. Exploiting this flaw could result in system instability, crashes, or potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code.
Statement
Bluetooth hci_unregister_dev can free hci_dev while cmd_timer or ncmd_timer delayed work is still armed. If one of these timeouts fires during teardown, the callback may dereference freed hci_dev memory including the hdev reset function pointer, which makes this a use-after-free candidate and not just a warning. For the CVSS the PR:L is used for the paranoid score because a reduced capability local process with Bluetooth management rights or delegated device control may be able to reach teardown or reset paths, while typical full device unregister remains administrator controlled. The issue is not directly network reachable over Bluetooth alone because the vulnerable operation is local device teardown. Impact is at least local denial of service via kernel crash and in the worst case may allow confidentiality or integrity impact due to use-after-free around a function pointer.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
