Description
A flaw was found in the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) sequencer component of the Linux kernel. A local attacker, by writing a direct variable event to itself, can read back a kernel memory address from the returned event header. This information disclosure could potentially be used to bypass Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and facilitate further attacks.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because it is constrained to local users with access to the ALSA sequencer subsystem and solely discloses kernel pointers rather than directly executing arbitrary code or elevating privileges. On typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux server and container deployments, sound and MIDI sequencer interfaces are seldom exposed or utilized. Consequently, while the leaked addresses could aid an attacker in circumventing Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization (KASLR), successful exploitation requires an additional vulnerability to achieve privilege escalation.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
