Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) sequencer MIDI component. A race condition exists during the teardown of MIDI output with event input processing. This can allow a local attacker to trigger a null pointer dereference or use-after-free condition. Successful exploitation could lead to a system crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is evaluated as a Moderate severity flaw because exploitation is limited to a local denial of service through a kernel panic, requiring local execution privileges with access to the sound subsystem. On typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux enterprise deployments, audio and MIDI sequencer subsystems are rarely utilized or exposed to unprivileged users. An authenticated local user with access to ALSA sequencer device nodes could trigger this race condition to crash the system, but the flaw does not facilitate arbitrary code execution or privilege escalation under default configurations.
