Description

A flaw was found in the ALSA 6fire driver within the Linux kernel. During error handling in the probe phase, the driver failed to properly manage a pending USB Request Block (URB) before freeing associated resources. This oversight could lead to a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability. A local attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a system crash (denial of service) or, in some scenarios, execute arbitrary code.

Statement

A use-after-free can occur in the ALSA 6fire USB driver during probe error handling because device resources may be freed while a URB is still pending. A malicious or faulty USB device can drive the probe into the error path and later completion of the pending URB may access freed driver state, causing a kernel crash and possibly memory corruption. For the CVSS the PR:N is used for the paranoid score because a physical USB attacker does not need a local account on the victim system to trigger device probing. The issue is not network reachable.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
