Description

A flaw was found in the netfs component of the Linux kernel. A memory allocation failure (ENOMEM) can occur during writeback operations when the system attempts to allocate folio_queue resources. This issue can lead to a kernel warning and potential system instability, which a local attacker could leverage to cause a Denial of Service (DoS).

Statement

This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because triggering it requires local access under severe memory pressure during network filesystem write operations, leading to potential denial of service without compromising confidentiality or integrity. The issue is confined to writeback processing in the netfs subsystem and does not enable privilege escalation. Older releases, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9, lack the vulnerable code implementation and remain unaffected.

CVSS score applicability

The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
