Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's memory management, specifically within the page_table_check functionality. An unprivileged local attacker could exploit this by populating a sufficient number of zero mappings. This action could lead to an overflow in the file_map_count, triggering a kernel panic and resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) for the system.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation is strictly restricted to local authenticated users and can only lead to a denial of service, with no compromise of system confidentiality or data integrity. Under standard deployments, the page table checking mechanism is an optional diagnostic feature that is not active by default. In environments where this verification subsystem is enabled, a local user can intentionally exhaust internal mapping counters to trigger an assertion crash and reboot the host.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
