Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's overlay filesystem (overlayfs). An unprivileged local user can repeatedly trigger a warning condition by manipulating user and mount namespaces and file system context operations. This can lead to kernel log flooding, kernel tainting, and potentially a system crash (Denial of Service) if the kernel is configured to panic on warnings.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as a Moderate impact because exploitation requires local system access with permissions to create user and mount namespaces, primarily causing kernel log flooding and kernel tainting. On standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux installations, the panic-on-warn feature is disabled by default, preventing a local unprivileged attacker from crashing the host. Furthermore, earlier platform releases such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 lack the vulnerable mount context logic entirely.
CVSS score applicability
