Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's hwmon subsystem, specifically within the ltc4282 driver. When a negative value is passed to the ltc4282_write_curr() function, an incorrect type cast converts this input into a large positive value. This leads to an integer overflow, causing the current limit to be set to a pseudo-random positive value instead of being correctly clamped to zero. This vulnerability could result in unexpected hardware behavior or a denial of service.
Statement
A moderate-severity integer overflow flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ltc4282 hardware monitoring (hwmon) driver. When a negative value is passed to the ltc4282_write_curr() function, the signed value is cast directly to an unsigned 64-bit integer, which turns the negative input into a very large positive value. The subsequent division result overflows the 32-bit variable and is truncated to an unpredictable positive value, so the current limit is written as the maximum supported limit instead of being correctly clamped to zero. Exploiting this flaw requires local access with privileges to write the current limit, and it may result in unexpected hardware behavior or a denial of service. Red Hat Product Security has rated this flaw as moderate impact with a CVSS:3.1 base score of 5.5 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). The vulnerable code is not present in any shipped Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Red Hat In-Vehicle OS kernel version; all Red Hat product streams, including the kernel, kernel-rt, and kernel-ivos-qualcomm components, are therefore marked as not affected.
