Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's bonding module, specifically within the Active-Backup Load Balancing (ALB) monitor. This vulnerability arises from a race condition where the system makes decisions based on outdated network interface status. This can lead to a system crash, causing a Denial of Service (DoS). Additionally, it may result in a network interface becoming stuck in promiscuous mode, which could lead to unexpected network behavior.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having Moderate impact because triggering the race condition requires specific administrative interface changes on systems utilizing bonding in adaptive load balancing (ALB) mode, limiting the blast radius to a localized denial of service. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, network bonding with ALB mode is not active by default and requires explicit network configuration. Unprivileged remote attackers cannot directly exploit this flaw, as it relies on an active slave change or removal event coinciding with monitor execution.
