Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's am65-cpsw-nuss Ethernet driver. When processing incoming network packets, the driver incorrectly extracts the MAC Port ID from the Source Tag, using 16 bits instead of the intended lower 8 bits. This error can lead to the driver accessing out-of-bound memory, resulting in a sporadic kernel crash. A remote attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted network packets, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) condition.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity rather than Important because exploitation is restricted to environments operating on Texas Instruments AM65x hardware platforms. General enterprise server and cloud deployments do not use this specific network controller driver. On affected embedded systems where the interface is active, receiving frames with unexpected source tag metadata can trigger out-of-bounds memory reads, causing a kernel crash and resulting in a denial of service.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
