Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's XFS filesystem. During dquot recovery, the xlog_recover_dquot_commit_pass2() function fails to correctly propagate verification errors. This allows a corrupt quota buffer to be written back to disk, potentially leading to data corruption within the XFS filesystem.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated with a Moderate severity for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because triggering it requires an ungraceful shutdown or crash recovery on an XFS filesystem with active quotas, limiting the impact to local integrity and availability. An attacker cannot exploit this issue remotely and would need either privileged access to mount crafted filesystem images or the ability to induce filesystem corruptions. The failure to handle log recovery errors leads to quota data inconsistency on disk rather than arbitrary code execution or unprivileged elevation of privileges.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
