Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's drm/amdgpu component. A local user could exploit improper validation of Graphics Execution Manager (GEM) CREATE domain combinations. By combining specific memory domains (CPU|GTT|VRAM) with special hardware domains (DOORBELL, GDS, GWS, or OA), a user could trigger an internal error, leading to a system crash and a denial of service.

Statement

A flaw of moderate impact was found in the AMDGPU driver (drm/amdgpu) of the Linux kernel as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS. The AMDGPU_GEM_CREATE ioctl checked requested domain bits against AMDGPU_GEM_DOMAIN_MASK but did not validate whether the selected domains may be used together. A local user with access to the amdgpu DRM device could therefore combine the CPU, GTT, or VRAM memory domains with special hardware domains such as DOORBELL, GDS, GWS, or OA. Such an invalid combination makes amdgpu_bo_placement_from_domain() exceed AMDGPU_BO_MAX_PLACEMENTS and hit a BUG_ON(), causing a kernel panic and a denial of service of the entire system. Confidentiality and integrity are not affected. Red Hat rated this flaw Moderate severity with CVSS:3.1 5.5 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), which is lower than the upstream CVE.org score of 7.8, because the only demonstrated impact is a system crash and there is no evidence of information disclosure, data modification, or privilege escalation. The fix is currently deferred for the affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS kernel streams, so updated packages are not yet available through those streams; the residual risk is limited to local denial of service by a user who already has access to the amdgpu graphics device.
