Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. The cs40l50-vibra driver, responsible for haptic feedback, improperly validates the length of custom data provided by a local user. This insufficient validation can lead to out-of-bounds reads and accesses when processing specially crafted input. A local attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or potentially disclose sensitive information.

Statement

A moderate-severity flaw was found in the Linux kernel's cs40l50-vibra haptic feedback driver. When a user sets a force-feedback effect through the EVIOCSFF ioctl, the driver copies the custom data of an FF_PERIODIC/FF_CUSTOM effect without validating that the user-controlled custom_len actually contains the two words the driver subsequently reads, and it stores the masked waveform bank value in a signed 16-bit integer so that values of 0x8000 and above wrap negative and bypass an upper-bound check. A local attacker with low privileges could submit a crafted effect with a zero or too-short custom_len, or a wrapping bank value, to trigger a NULL pointer dereference or an out-of-bounds read/access in kernel memory, most likely causing a denial of service (system crash), with a theoretical possibility of sensitive information disclosure. Red Hat Product Security rates this flaw Moderate (CVSS:3.1 5.5, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), which is lower than the upstream CVEORG rating of Important (7.8), because the concrete impact is limited to availability and no reliable path to confidentiality or integrity impact has been established. All Red Hat products tracked by this flaw, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 through 10 (kernel and kernel-rt) and RHIVOS (kernel-ivos-qualcomm), are marked not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in these shipped kernels.
