Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's net: enetc module. When the num_vsi value is zero, a divide-by-zero error occurs during the allocation of network rings. While this issue may not cause an immediate system crash on some architectures, it represents undefined behavior that could lead to system instability or unexpected operational issues, particularly across different computing platforms.

Statement

A moderate-impact divide-by-zero flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ENETC network driver. On i.MX94-series platforms, the standalone ENETC devices do not support SR-IOV, so the number of virtual stations (pf->caps.num_vsi) is zero; when enetc4_default_rings_allocation() distributes network rings between the physical function and virtual functions, this results in a division by zero. Division by zero is undefined behavior in C. On ARM64 the UDIV/SDIV instructions silently return zero rather than raising an exception, so the flaw does not cause a visible crash on that architecture, but relying on this behavior is incorrect and poses a cross-platform compatibility risk that could lead to system instability or an unexpected kernel fault. Red Hat Product Security rated this flaw Moderate severity (CVSS 3.1 base score 5.5, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). The vulnerable code is not present in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel and kernel-rt packages across tracked Red Hat Enterprise Linux streams or in the Red Hat In-Vehicle OS kernels, so Red Hat products are not affected by this issue.
