Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's EDAC/igen6 driver. When this driver is unloaded, a missing 'release()' function for memory controller devices can lead to a system call trace. This issue indicates a system error and could potentially result in system instability or a denial of service (DoS).
Statement
A low impact flaw was found in the Linux kernel EDAC igen6 driver shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS. The igen6_edac driver registers its memory controller devices without a release() function, so when a privileged local user unloads the driver, the kernel emits a WARNING call trace from the device release path. This is a device lifetime management bug rather than a memory corruption issue, and its practical consequence is a local availability concern; on systems configured to panic on kernel warnings it could result in a kernel panic and denial of service. Kernels in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, 9, and 10 update streams and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS 2 are affected, while Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 ELS, 7 ELS, and 8.4 are not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in those streams. Because triggering this issue requires privileged local access and the observable effect is a kernel warning call trace rather than memory corruption or a security boundary violation, the fix is deferred to a future update; the residual risk is limited to local denial of service by an already privileged user. Although the Red Hat CVSS:3.1 base score for this flaw is 5.5 (Moderate), Red Hat rates the overall security impact as low for these reasons.
