Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Universal Flash Storage (UFS) core tracing module. The system attempts to access a memory location that has already been freed when processing trace events, specifically within the TP_printk() function. This use-after-free vulnerability can be triggered when reading trace events, potentially leading to a system crash and a denial of service.
Statement
A use-after-free flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Universal Flash Storage (UFS) core tracing code, rated by Red Hat as having moderate impact. Trace events defined in drivers/ufs/core/ufs_trace.h store a pointer to the UFS host controller (hba) structure, and TP_printk() dereferences that saved pointer to print the device name when the trace event is read from /sys/kernel/tracing/trace. Because TP_printk() executes at read time, which can occur long after the tracepoint fired, the hba pointer may already have been freed, and dereferencing it can crash the kernel and cause a denial of service. Triggering this issue requires local access with privileges sufficient to read the kernel trace file. All Red Hat kernel components currently tracked for this flaw (kernel, kernel-rt, and kernel-ivos-qualcomm) are marked not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in the shipped kernel versions. Red Hat assesses the severity as moderate (CVSS 5.5, availability impact only), which is lower than the CVE.org score of 7.8; the higher upstream score assumes confidentiality and integrity impact that the available technical evidence, which demonstrates only a kernel crash, does not support.
