Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's hwmon ltc4282 driver. This vulnerability occurs due to an out-of-bounds read when processing the minimum alarm voltage for the VGPIO channel, caused by a missing return statement. A local attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service or obtain incorrect system readings.
Statement
A moderate impact flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ltc4282 hardware monitoring (hwmon) driver. A missing return statement in the handling of the minimum alarm voltage for the VGPIO channel causes an out-of-bounds read. A local attacker with low privileges could exploit this flaw to cause a denial of service (system crash or kernel panic) or to obtain incorrect hardware-monitoring readings. Red Hat assessed the impact of this flaw as Moderate (CVSS 5.5, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), which is lower than the upstream CVEORG rating of 7.8 (Important) because Red Hat's assessment finds the impact limited to system availability, with no confidentiality or integrity impact. All shipped Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS kernel and kernel-rt streams are marked not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in the shipped kernel versions, so no Red Hat products are currently affected by this flaw.
