Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's ring-buffer component. When 8-byte alignment is enforced, the system incorrectly calculates the length of small events. This error causes these events to report a data length that is 4 bytes larger than their actual size. This discrepancy can lead to misinterpretation of data within the ring buffer, affecting system tracing and debugging information.

Statement

Red Hat has evaluated this issue as having a Low security impact because it only results in minor misreporting of trace event lengths rather than memory corruption or privilege escalation, and interacting with kernel tracing infrastructure requires administrative privileges. Furthermore, the problem is limited to specific architectures that enforce 64-bit alignment in the ring buffer. Standard production workloads and unprivileged users cannot leverage this behavior to affect system availability or compromise kernel security.
