Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's drm/i915 module. A local user could exploit a null pointer dereference in the i915_pci_probe() function. This occurs when a device is force-bound via sysfs driver_override, causing driver_data to be NULL and subsequently dereferenced. Successful exploitation could lead to a system crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Low impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires local privileged access to manipulate device driver bindings via sysfs, limiting the blast radius to a localized denial of service. Standard enterprise server deployments typically operate headless and do not manually force-bind unmatching PCI devices to graphics drivers via sysfs overrides. Consequently, typical production environments face minimal operational risk unless privileged administrative interfaces are misconfigured or abused.
