Description
A flaw was found in ext4, the extended filesystem for the Linux kernel. When concurrent extended attribute (xattr) workloads are processed, an ABBA deadlock can occur between a running transaction and the eviction thread. This situation causes both tasks to wait indefinitely for each other, leading to system unresponsiveness or a hang. A local attacker could exploit this to cause a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact because exploitation is constrained to local access and results in a denial of service without affecting system confidentiality or data integrity. While XFS is the default filesystem across modern Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases, ext4 remains supported and susceptible when formatted or mounted with the ea_inode feature enabled. Triggering the deadlock requires an unprivileged local user to induce heavy concurrent extended attribute transactions and inode evictions.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
