Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's handling of ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) tables, specifically within the IOAPIC (I/O Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller) hotplug lookup. The system did not properly validate the bounds of MADT (Multiple APIC Description Table) and _MAT records. This could lead to an attacker providing malformed ACPI data, potentially causing memory corruption or system instability.
Statement
Red Hat has evaluated this issue as Moderate severity because supplying crafted firmware tables requires either administrative privileges or control over the hypervisor environment. To exploit this flaw, an attacker must provide malformed description records during processor or interrupt controller discovery, potentially causing a kernel crash or memory corruption. On standard enterprise deployments, unprivileged users cannot modify firmware structures, which substantially limits the blast radius.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
