Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) arena component. The bpf_arena_free_pages() function incorrectly handles scalar arena addresses. When a scalar value is below the arena base, it can lead to an out-of-range memory offset. This issue could allow a local attacker to reuse memory addresses outside the intended arena mapping, potentially leading to memory corruption.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires local access with elevated capabilities to load and manage BPF programs, restricting the exposed attack surface on standard installations. By default, Red Hat Enterprise Linux disables unprivileged extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) execution, preventing standard users from interacting with the arena subsystem. As a result, potential memory corruption is constrained to environments where untrusted users are explicitly granted administrative privileges such as CAP_BPF or CAP_SYS_ADMIN.
