Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. In PowerPC builds configured with position-relative code support, inline assembly routines responsible for handling interrupts fail to declare modified processor registers. This omission can result in register corruption during interrupt processing, allowing a local user to cause a kernel crash and resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated Moderate rather than Important because exploitation is limited to a local denial of service through an operating system crash, with no compromise of system confidentiality or integrity. Exposure is constrained strictly to PowerPC platforms built with position-relative addressing enabled, leaving common x86_64, aarch64, and s390x deployments unaffected. Furthermore, older enterprise platforms including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, 8, and 9 do not incorporate the affected assembly logic.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
