Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's mac80211 wireless subsystem. When handling transmission frames in Neighbor Awareness Networking (NAN) mode, the system sets an invalid frequency band value that triggers an out-of-bounds array read during header processing. A local user able to trigger or monitor these transmissions could exploit this vulnerability to crash the system, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).

Statement

A Moderate severity flaw was found in the Linux kernel's mac80211 wireless subsystem. When a frame is transmitted in Neighbor Awareness Networking (NAN) mode, the band on which it will be sent is unknown, so the kernel sets info->band to NUM_NL80211_BANDS. When ieee80211_add_tx_radiotap_header builds the radiotap header for such a frame captured in monitor mode, it uses that out-of-range value to index the supported-bands (sbands) array, causing an out-of-bounds read that can crash the kernel. A local user able to trigger or monitor NAN frame transmissions could exploit this flaw to crash the system, resulting in a denial of service; confidentiality and integrity are not impacted. Red Hat rated this flaw Moderate impact (CVSS 3.1: 5.5, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). The currently affected products are Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and 10, Red Hat In-Vehicle OS, and the RHEL CoreOS 9 based nodes of OpenShift Container Platform 4.22, 4.23, 5.0 and 5.1; earlier Red Hat Enterprise Linux streams and their kernel-rt and RHEL CoreOS 8 counterparts are not affected because the vulnerable code is not present in those kernels. Fixes for the affected streams are deferred: this is a local, denial-of-service-only issue in the NAN monitor-mode path, so the fix will be delivered in a future scheduled kernel update rather than as an immediate erratum. The residual risk is that a local user could crash the kernel on systems where NAN transmissions are configured and captured in monitor mode.
