Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's iSCSI (Internet Small Computer Systems Interface) target subsystem. A remote client can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending remaining data packets for a write request that was aborted by a device reset command. Because the subsystem fails to signal completion for the canceled operation, the worker thread hangs indefinitely, resulting in a thread deadlock.
Statement
A moderate-impact denial of service flaw exists in the Linux kernel's iSCSI target (LIO) subsystem, affecting the kernel and kernel-rt packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, 9, and 10, the kernel packages in Red Hat In-Vehicle OS 2, and the RHEL CoreOS nodes shipped with OpenShift Container Platform 4. If a LUN reset aborts a WRITE command that is in the TRANSPORT_WRITE_PENDING state and the initiator then sends the remaining Data-Out PDUs, the target discards the payload but never signals completion for the aborted command. As a result, the abort path blocks indefinitely in target_put_cmd_and_wait(), deadlocking the target worker thread. A remote iSCSI initiator with an established session to an exported LUN can trigger this behavior deterministically, causing a denial of service with no impact on confidentiality or integrity; Red Hat's Moderate rating reflects that triggering requires access to the iSCSI storage network. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 7 are not affected because the synchronous ABORT/LUN RESET handling that contains this flaw is not present in those streams. The fix is currently deferred for the affected Red Hat products, so the residual risk remains that a system exporting an iSCSI target can be forced into a target-worker deadlock by an initiator until a fixed kernel is deployed.
