Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. A local user can trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) by binding an excessive number of service addresses to sockets in the Transparent Inter-Process Communication (TIPC) subsystem. When the internal name table reaches its capacity limit, required protocol service records fail to register, resulting in a NULL pointer dereference that crashes the system.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity because exploitation requires local access and is limited to causing a denial of service through a kernel crash, without allowing privilege escalation or data leakage. On Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the TIPC kernel module is not loaded by default and is only utilized in specialized clustering environments. Consequently, systems are only susceptible if the TIPC subsystem has been explicitly configured and loaded.
CVSS score applicability
