Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's event device (evdev) subsystem. When processing device configuration requests with a smaller-than-expected data size, the kernel fails to initialize a temporary memory structure on the stack before copying user data into it. A local user can exploit this vulnerability to read uninitialized kernel stack data back into user space, resulting in information disclosure of sensitive system memory.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because triggering the flaw requires local access with read and write permissions to an input event device, restricting the attack surface. In default Red Hat Enterprise Linux configurations, access to event nodes under /dev/input is confined to privileged accounts, the input group, or active console sessions. Furthermore, while the flaw permits reading uninitialized stack memory, it cannot be leveraged directly for arbitrary code execution or modifying kernel state.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
