Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) 6fire USB audio driver. When processing incoming audio data, the driver improperly calculates buffer sizes based on device-reported packet lengths without sufficient bounds checking. An attacker capable of connecting a crafted USB device could exploit this issue to trigger an out-of-bounds write, leading to a system crash, denial of service (DoS), or potentially arbitrary code execution.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate severity rather than Important because successful exploitation requires physical access to attach a malicious USB device or access to an emulated USB subsystem in a virtualized environment. The affected sound driver is not typically loaded by default on enterprise servers and container deployments unless the specific TerraTec DMX 6Fire USB hardware is present. Consequently, the practical risk to standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments is limited.
CVSS score applicability
The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product's status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.
Mitigation
Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options don't meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.
