Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth subsystem. This vulnerability can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) due to an out-of-bounds memory read. The issue occurs when the Host Controller Interface (HCI) socket implementation filters event packets without verifying that the packet buffer is large enough before inspecting header fields. A local attacker or a compromised Bluetooth controller can exploit this flaw by sending a truncated event packet, potentially causing a system crash.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires local system privileges or communication with an attached hardware or virtual Bluetooth controller to trigger the denial of service. The out-of-bounds read leads to a kernel crash, but it cannot be exploited remotely over the network without hardware interaction or existing local access. In standard enterprise server environments, Bluetooth hardware and subsystems are typically absent or disabled, significantly limiting the exposure of typical installations.
