Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Reliable Datagram Sockets (RDS) subsystem. When handling local connections, the system miscalculates the required communication paths, allocating internal work queues that are not properly freed during connection teardown. A local user can exploit this vulnerability by repeatedly opening and closing local connections, triggering a kernel memory leak that can lead to resource exhaustion and a Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Low severity because triggering the memory leak requires local access with unprivileged socket creation, and it only affects system availability without threatening confidentiality or integrity. In typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, the Reliable Datagram Sockets protocol is not commonly deployed and the underlying kernel module is not loaded by default. Exploitation requires repeated local socket operations over an extended period to cause noticeable resource exhaustion.
CVSS score applicability
