Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) verifier. A local attacker can exploit this flaw to cause kernel memory corruption and potentially achieve privilege escalation or a denial of service (system crash). This vulnerability occurs because the verifier fails to reject non-negative stack offsets, allowing a crafted BPF program to improperly access and interpret memory outside the allocated stack boundaries.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having Moderate impact for Red Hat Enterprise Linux because exploitation requires local access with elevated privileges, specifically administrative or BPF-loading capabilities, to load programs utilizing iterator kfuncs. Standard Red Hat deployments disable unprivileged eBPF by default, substantially restricting the attack surface to trusted or administrative accounts. While successfully bypassing stack validation can lead to out-of-bounds kernel memory corruption or host denial of service, the prerequisite of high privilege prevents direct exploitation by unprivileged local users.
