Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's tracing subsystem. When configuring event triggers, a failure during command parsing does not unregister the trigger before releasing its internal tracking memory. A local user with access to the kernel tracing interface could exploit this flaw by submitting a malformed command, leaving an active trigger that references freed memory. This issue can cause kernel memory corruption, leading to a system crash and Denial of Service (DoS).
Statement
This vulnerability is evaluated with a Moderate severity impact because triggering the flaw requires local execution and elevated administrative privileges on the target host. In default Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, writing to event trigger interfaces in tracefs is restricted to root or users granted the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability. Although improperly handled trigger errors can result in kernel memory corruption and a system crash, the prerequisite for high privileges contains the attack surface to trusted administrators.
